Limnos is the 8th biggest island of Greece; it belongs to the group of islands of Northern Aegean Sea.  It's located between Mountain Athos, Samothraki, Imbros and Lesvos islands.  With the neighbouring island of Agios Efstratios, constitute the County of Limnos.

Natural Environment

Limnos, with its volcanic soil in very impressive colourful shapes, mild shaped hills and mountains, low flora and valleys of big cultivable areas, is a place of unparalleled beauty. Its unique shape that many compare to a butterfly is due to its big gulfs, its natural bays and its small ports, that vary with the endless embroidered beaches with clear blue waters.  The environment of the island is of sublime natural beauty and value and it is characterized by a variety of ecosystems, rich in flora and fauna.
The entire island of Limnos has been characterized as a place of natural beauty. Asprolimni, Chortarolimni and Alyki, the biggest natural salt lake in Greece, host many, rare and protected species of birds and they consist the biggest wetland of Limnos, which has been listed in the network of protected areas “NATURA 2000”.  Another, really remarkable natural sight of Limnos is the inland dunes which form a “desert” in the heart of Aegean Sea.  The entire semi hilled island of Agios Efstratios is also listed to the network of protected areas “NATURA 2000” since it has important habitats for the bird fauna.  It also has, some impressive sea caves and beautiful, sandy beaches in its west side; on the east side, the beaches become rocky and steep but still remain impressive and magnificent.

Local Products

The island of Limnos is famous for the quality of its local products, many of them are still produced with the traditional ways. The famous “Flormaria” (pasta), the rusks, the thyme honey, the really fresh fish, the sea food and the local ouzo which is produced in “lakaria”, the traditional distillers of the island, are some of them.  Very famous are, also, the dairy products such as “kalathaki” a white cheese in a basket which is characterized as product with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) which is congeals in the “tirvolia”, small baskets knitted with bulrushes, and “melipasto” or “melichloro” cheese which is produced only during the summer time.  The vines of Limnos with local grape varieties give excellent wines, which are distinguished for their aroma and great taste. Especially the variety of Moshato Alexandrias gives wines characterized as products of Appellation of High Quality Origin (VQPRD) and Appellation of Origin Control (A.O.C.) which win awards in international competitions and fairs. The cuisine of the island uses fully the local products and enchants with its originality and authentic tastes. Even though, Agios Efstratios has a few local products, they are characterized by their top quality and great flavour.  The fresh fishes and the sea food with the lobsters which are famous as the most delicious of the Aegean Sea, are mainly used in the local cuisine.  Also, there are some excellent local cheeses and of course, the ouzo.
